 It was in 1991, when the former Lindsey Pipe Band folded due to complications, that the previous members formed the Scunthorpe and District Pipe Band. However the band went through a difficult patch with the Treasurer and Pipe Major at the time, and they unfortunately had to disband and reform under the new title - The Scunthorpe and District Pipe Band and Highland Dancers. Thus removing the band from any bad history in which they were bound by.
Since reforming the band has become much more prosperous and successful.
The band has worked hard, enabling them to buy all their own equipment and uniform, making the band look very professional. The band has been able to purchase new instruments, meaning they can bring a more crisp, clearer sound of Scotland all over the country.
The band has played at a number of interesting venues in it's lifetime, from small engagements such as Appleby Show in Lincolnshire, to the Marie Curie Mass Pipe Band parades in Edinburgh & Northampton. Thanks to the hard work from all the members of the band, the band has gone from strength to strength. The band has recently started competing a few times a year and has even been placed several times in 2006 and 2007.
The band wears Modern Royal Stewart tartan kilts, complimented by green ties and waistcoats. The band uniform is made and provided by one of the top kilt makers in Scotland, The Kilt and Suit Company of Hamilton. Tel:(01698)281851
SDPBHD has its very own highland dance school attached to it that are trained to a very high standard in preparation for competition and are proud to boast many gold, silver, and bronze medallist dancers amongst their ranks. The dancing school has two highly qualified dance instructors who also judge at competitions. Dance classes are held on a Tuesday evening from 5:00-9:00pm at the Polish Club.
Band Practises are held every Monday night at the Polish Club in Scunthorpe. [click for directions] Practices are held between 6:30 and 9:00pm. There is a separate practice held on Wednesday evenings (also 6:30-9:00pm) for the senior members of the band who are practicing for competitions.
The band is available to hire all year round for any event - be it a wedding, funeral, gala etc. The band can perfom as a full band or mini-band, with and without dancers, or even just a few senior pipers.
